I have been using Kohinoor and Daawat rice for a while now, but mostly for making pulaavs. I usually get the Kohinoor Pulav Basmati Rice, which has always been reliable for those aromatic, fluffy grains, and Daawat Pulav Rice has been good too though I have found Daawat to be a bit pricier.
Now, I am thinking about switching to the Super Basmati varieties, like the ones from Daawat, Kohinoor, or India Gate. From what I’ve seen online, prices for these brands seem to vary quite a bit:
– Daawat Super Basmati Rice is around ₹185 for a 1 kg pack.
– Kohinoor Super Basmati is priced at approximately ₹180 for 1 kg.
– India Gate Super Basmati sits slightly higher at about ₹200 for 1 kg.
Has anyone tried the Super Basmati versions from these brands? I am not actually worried about the pricing because this will be used for special days only. One more thing if you have used it, how does it compare to their regular Basmati or Pulav rice? I’m curious if there’s a noticeable difference in quality and taste for dishes like biryanis or even plain steamed rice.
Let me know which brand you prefer and if the extra cost for Super Basmati is justified!
We get random brands from mostly the three you mentioned. It is hardly distinguishable whether it was Daawat or India Gate etc. I believe a part of it can be attributed to the cooking skills and I appreciate the effort of the cook there. Regardless of the brand, the rice is always fluffy and well separated grains.
The same rice sometimes becomes mushy when cooked by someone else. So, I would not worry about finding out what is better and what is not – especially in a similar price range. And do note that the rice from one batch can vary a lot from another batch from the same brand.
For the rozana (daily use) variety of Basmati Rice, the grains are usually broken. It is worth checking the packet in person when buying. Results vary from one batch to another.
I totally agree that cooking skills play a big role in how the rice turns out. It is funny how the same brand can sometimes behave so differently depending on who’s cooking it. That said, it’s good to know that regardless of the brand, you can still get a decent result if it’s cooked right. I also didn’t realize that even batches from the same brand can vary so much; good to keep in mind when picking up a packet. I have noticed that too with the rozana variety; the broken grains are a bit of a hit or miss. Checking the packet is definitely a smart move.
Do you have any tips or tricks for ensuring the rice stays fluffy, no matter the brand or batch? Would love to hear if there’s anything special you do while cooking!
