Wi-Fi Extenders vs Mesh Routers for Indian Apartments

Every person I know who has bought a Wi-Fi extender has the same story. They bought it, plugged it in somewhere in the middle of the house, the signal indicator showed two or three bars, they called it sorted, and then slowly realised their phone was still clinging to the main router’s weak signal in the bedroom rather than switching to the extender that was three rooms closer. That is not a bad product problem. That is a misunderstanding of how extenders work and when they are the wrong solution entirely. Let me start there before getting into what to actually buy.

The concrete wall problem nobody talks about

Indian apartments are built differently from most of the world. In the US and Europe, most internal walls are drywall over a wooden frame. Wi-Fi goes through drywall like it is not there. In India, every wall, internal separating walls included, is RCC concrete or brick and mortar. That changes everything about how signal behaves in your home. A Wi-Fi signal that would cover 2,000 square feet in an American home might struggle to cover 900 square feet in a 2BHK in Pune or Bengaluru. The concrete absorbs and scatters the signal aggressively. This is why products that get rave reviews abroad sometimes feel underwhelming here. It also explains why an extender placed in the wrong spot, which is almost always either too far from the router or too far from the dead zone, does nothing useful. The extender needs to receive a reasonably strong signal from the router to extend it. Put it in a dead zone and it has nothing to extend.

Extender or mesh: 

If you have one room with a problem, say the bedroom at the far end of a 2BHK, a good extender placed in the hallway halfway between the router and that room will fix it. That is the right use case. Simple, cheap, done. If you have multiple rooms with problems, if the signal is inconsistent as you move around the house, or if your 3BHK has more than two concrete walls between the router and where your family actually sits, an extender is the wrong tool. An extender adds a second network. Your phone has to decide when to switch between them, and phones are stubborn about this. They often stay connected to the weaker main router signal because switching feels like more effort to the device, and you end up with the extended network sitting unused while you buffer a YouTube video 15 feet away from it.

Mesh is different. A mesh system creates one seamless network across multiple nodes. As you walk from the living room to the bedroom, your device hands off to the nearest node automatically without you noticing or doing anything. There is no awkward switching, no two networks with different names that confuse your smart TV.

The extenders worth buying

TP-Link RE200 AC750

This is the extender I would put in a 1BHK or small 2BHK where one room, usually a bedroom or bathroom area, has dead signal. It is dual-band, which matters because single-band extenders are basically useless in 2025. Dual band means it can use the less congested 5GHz band to talk to your router and 2.4GHz to serve your devices, or vice versa, which reduces the speed penalty you normally take with extenders.

Setup is a physical WPS button press if your router supports it, or a quick web interface. No app required. For most people that is actually a feature, not a limitation. The honest truth about the RE200 is that it is not fast. Do not expect 300 Mbps at the edge of its range. You will get 80 to 120 Mbps on a good day, which is more than enough for video calls, streaming, and browsing but not ideal if you are working with large files or have a 500 Mbps connection you paid for and want to actually use. Place it halfway between your router and the dead zone. Not in the dead zone itself. That is the placement mistake that makes extenders look useless.

TP-Link RE505X Wi-Fi 6 Extender

If your router is Wi-Fi 6 compatible and you want something that will not bottleneck your connection, the RE505X is the step-up. Wi-Fi 6 handles multiple devices simultaneously better than older standards, which matters in homes where the TV, four phones, two laptops, and assorted smart devices are all asking for bandwidth at the same time. The gigabit Ethernet port on this is genuinely useful. Plug a desktop or smart TV into it with a cable and that device gets a reliable wired connection even though it is sitting far from the main router. That solves dead zone problems for stationary devices completely. OneMesh compatibility means if you have a TP-Link router that also supports OneMesh, the extender becomes part of a single network rather than creating a separate one. That is almost the seamlessness of mesh at a fraction of the cost, though the backhaul is still shared spectrum so performance is not quite as clean as true mesh.

The mesh systems worth buying

TP-Link Deco M4 2-Pack

This is where most Indian families with a 3BHK or a spread-out 2BHK should start. Two Deco M4 units replace your existing router entirely. One connects to your ISP modem, the other goes wherever you have dead signal, and together they create one network that your devices roam across without you managing anything. The Deco app is genuinely easy. Not easy for a tech person easy, actually easy. You add the units, name the network, and it works. Parental controls, device prioritization, and guest network are all in the app without requiring you to touch any browser-based router settings. A 2-pack covers around 3,500 to 4,000 square feet in theory. In practice with Indian concrete walls, plan for 2,500 to 3,000 square feet with two units. For a 2BHK that is plenty. For a 3BHK with more than two floors or very thick walls, go for the 3-pack. The one limitation worth knowing: the M4 is AC1200, which is Wi-Fi 5. It is not going to max out a 500 Mbps or 1 Gbps broadband plan. If you are on Jio Fiber’s 1 Gbps plan and want to actually see those speeds over Wi-Fi, step up to the Deco X20 which is Wi-Fi 6.

TP-Link Deco X20 2-Pack

Wi-Fi 6, AX1800, covers 4,000 square feet with two units, and handles 120 connected devices. This is the one for families with higher broadband plans, lots of devices, or anyone who has been frustrated by speed drops when multiple people are on the network simultaneously. The difference between the M4 and X20 in daily use for a family on a 200 to 300 Mbps plan is not dramatic. Both will feel fast. The X20 starts pulling ahead when you are doing multiple 4K streams simultaneously, video calls on multiple devices, and have 15 plus things connected. It is also more future-proof because Wi-Fi 6 will be the standard for the next several years.

D-Link M15 Wi-Fi 6 Mesh 2-Pack

D-Link does not get talked about as much as TP-Link but the M15 deserves serious consideration, especially at its price point relative to the Deco X20. Wi-Fi 6 at 1500 Mbps, covers 4,000 square feet with two units, gigabit ports, and MTCTE certified which means it has been tested for Indian market compliance. The AI-powered mesh part of the marketing is a little breathless but the underlying product is solid. The app is slightly less polished than Deco’s but the core functionality is identical. If the D-Link is on sale and comes in below the Deco X20, it is worth choosing.

TP-Link Deco XE75 Wi-Fi 6E 2-Pack

This is for people who are serious about their home network and want the best available in India right now without going into enterprise-grade territory. Wi-Fi 6E adds a third 6GHz band that is completely uncongested because almost no devices use it yet. In an apartment building where 30 neighbours are also running 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks that interfere with yours, having a clean 6GHz backhaul between the two mesh nodes is genuinely meaningful.

For most people this is overkill. If you are on a 300 Mbps plan and have a family of four, the Deco M4 2-pack at a third of the price delivers everything you will notice in daily use. The XE75 is for someone running a home office, gaming seriously, streaming 4K on multiple screens simultaneously, and wanting headroom they will not max out for five years.
