Recently I had to buy a large luggage bag for a few days of hospital stay for a relative. Here is all that I researched about the models and brands and features you should look for when buying a luggage bag with wheels.
- Size and Flight Cabin Size: If you are looking for multipurpose bag, check if they can fit the hand baggage dimensions for flights. That way you can have a good use of the bag. The length of the bag can be a problem due to the handle mechanism.
- Also your bag should be large enough to store the required items. The wheels and the handle rod mechanism etc eat some space. So total available space may be slightly less.
- Zipper Quality: Bad zippers can break and make the costly bag unusable. Always closely see the zipper and see reviews about the zipper quality
- Nylon or Polyester: Nylon bags are strong but costly. If you do not expect a lot of rough use, polyester bags can be good – cheaper and lightweight.
- Brand: Basically you get what you pay for. Still good brands mostly use slightly better material because their brand name is at stake. Try to see if you can compromise with some minor features and get a good brand bag at the same price.
Any other comments please add.
One mire thing can be the type of handle. Some duffle bags have hard rod type handles same as in suitcases.
Other type bags have just a soft band to pull it.
I think the rod type proper handles are more comfortable to manage. Because of its length, there will not be a lot of pressure from heavy bag.
Agree 100%. I had rejected the bags without the rod type handle. Sorry, forgot to write about that.
Bags with wheels but without rods are very good from weight and size point of view. You will still find it easier than no wheels at all. I perso ally will buy one without rod handles.
Check if the bag size can be folded or reduced to flight cabin bag dimensions. It is sometimes a lifesaver if you are late to airport. You can just convert your luggage bag to hand baggage and will not need to check in the bag.
I was in a situation once. Had to just remove some safety pins etc from the bag.
Thanks for sharing your research on buying a luggage bag with wheels. I am also looking to buy one and have no idea where to look. Your insights are quite valuable! Considering the size, especially if it can fit flight cabin dimensions, is a smart move for a multipurpose bag. I usually travel using flight for office work. It’s essential to think about the length because of the handle mechanism; that’s something I hadn’t considered before. I couldn’t agree more about the importance of zipper quality. I have always struggled with zipper quality whenever I have bought a product online.A broken zipper can turn a good bag into a headache. And getting it repaired again and again makes the bag bad. Nylon vs. polyester is an interesting point. It’s good to know that polyester can be a more budget-friendly option, especially if you don’t anticipate rough handling. And when it comes to brands, you’re right that reputation often reflects the quality of the bag. Sometimes, it’s worth compromising on minor features to go with a trusted brand. I have learnt this the hard way. I experienced this when I bought a local laptop bag which got torn easily and then a Skybag which worked for 3 years without any issues.
Thanks for an insightful post. This will really help in finding the perfect bag for people who travel quite often on flights and struggle to accommodate it in a cabin. I have also had the same issue and would often check in the bag instead of keeping it with me due to size issues. Time to look for a new bag!
