Work laptop under 80k

My wife’s employer offers funds upto 80000 rupees to buy laptop for work. FYI, they have been using personal laptops for office work so far. Now that Amazon Prime Day is there, I am considering making the purchase.

Can someone comment on what laptop may make sense? Based on the work laptops I have seen/used, I think the following may be essential:

  • At least 8GB RAM
  • Modern Processor, nothing specific
  • Backlit keyboard
  • What size screen? 14 inch is the usual for most. Should I get 15inch as this may be used for personal stuff as well?
  • Convertible? The laptops that can be turned 360 degree and made a tablet?

What else?

  1. Lenovo and Asus have a wide range of thin laptops that match your needs.

On the convertible 2-in-1 laptops, I don’t think they are the best from performance point of view. How often do you imagine using them as a tablet? The tablet mode also restricts free air movement and hence affects cooling.

2-in-1 laptops are costly as well. At same price you can get normal laptops with higher specs – more battery life, better performance. Gaming also recommends a normal laptop.

I know in India we somehow prefer more-in-one concept and that sells as well. Just think, are you going to use the convertible feature? Is it worth sacrificing some performance?

    1. I understand the tendency to get more-in-one things. Being able to convert it to tablet will be a plus anyhow. You know, touchscreen on laptops is so difficult to use normally. Getting rid of the keyboard can make it more usable.

On different note, how about sim card slot and fingerprint readers on laptops?

      1. I tried my best to find 15.6 inch flip models. There were not a lot of those. Most flip designs are business laptops and 14 inch is preferred by most. You can find quite a few by just searching for flip laptops or 2-in-1 laptops.

  2. In the end I did not make the purchase. The 2 in 1 laptops seem expensive for the flip feature. Better specs are available at lower price for normal laptops. There is more choice too. Convince me to buy a flip laptop please?

    1. No I did not buy for now. Thanks to everyome here for your comments. We realized there will not be much use of a 2 in 1 laptop. So we did not want to pay extra for that feature.

We too liked LG Gram. But there were no 16gb RAM models.

    1. In my research, I found people complaining about the OLED screen quality and longevity in these Asus laptops. These are said to be the cheapest quality OLED screens just because they have to say it is OLED. By the way, I purchased a non-OLED model vivobook 16X.

  3. I am in the same boat. Shortlisted “Lenovo Ideapad Slim 5 Pro AMD Ryzen NVIDIA 7 5800H 16 Inches QHD”
    Any suggestions?
I heard this laptop is good enough for video editing etc for youtube. Nice screen size and quality is what I heard from people. Any better models you guys suggest?

    1. How is the performance of Asus 16X? I like the laptop but want to know if it is good for photo editing and video editing.

  4. It is funny that the price of all laptops went up this time during Amazon Great Indian Festival Sale. Flipkart Big Billion Days Sale has some good laptop deals. But I am now scared about buying anything on heavy discount. Looks like people are complaining about old and defective products.
