If Someone In Your Family Has Diabetes, Then Don’t Buy Sugar Free

Let me share a personal experience about my dad’s journey with diabetes and sugar substitutes. It all started when my dad was diagnosed with diabetes due to his high sugar consumption. He couldn’t resist indulging in sugary treats. On average, we were consuming a staggering 10 teaspoons of sugar every day, which caught up to him.

To tackle his sweet tooth my dad turned to Sugar Free. We thought they were the perfect solution. This sweetener promised the same sweetness without the calories, making them appear as the answer for my dad to enjoy sweet stuff.

However, after researching I soon learned that not all was as it seemed. These sweetener contains many harmful chemical based sweetener, which are dangerous in long run.

You can find the following names on the back of the label

– Aspartame: This was the most common one. after reading, I learned it was initially linked to cancer-causing agents in the body before its approval in 1981. Excessive use could lead to neurological symptoms like intellectual disabilities and hyperactivity.

– Sucralose is also one of the content. It had fewer negative effects than others, but it still had some impact on the thymus.

– Acesulfame potassium: another ingredient which is 200 times sweeter than sugar, but I learned that it was controversial in its impact on the human body, and its long-term effects remained uncertain.

After learning the dangers I finally decided to throw those sweeteners and asked my dad to live without sugar. But after doing research on Natural Sweeteners, I came across Stevia, which is a natural sweetener called meethi tulsi. I started to read more about it and found it good enough for my dad. After trying our several brands, here are some good ones that you can ask diabetics you know to try:

Organic India, Magicleaf, Zevic, So Sweet. My dad personally prefers Organic India and Magicleaf Stevia. Both of them are good, but Magicleaf is a bit expensive.

  1. Hope you guys know that Natural is not the same as Safe.

Most poisonous substances and chemicals are derived from plants and natural sources.

  2. It is true that artifical sweeteners are not good for your health in the long run. Diabetics are tempted or recommended to have sweeteners as sugar substitute but we need more awareness regarding the long term side effects of artificial sweeteners.

Brands promote natural and plant- based sweetners saying that they are a safer alternative. However, even they are not completely safe.

According to celebrity nutritionist Pooja Makhija, we don’t really need any type of sweeteners. Our tongue has taste buds that change every 21 days. Once we start having beverages in their natural form, our taste buds would adapt to that within 21 days. Also, we would get to taste the real flavor of beverages that are generally overpowered by the sweetness.

Treating youself to sweets once in a while is permissible, but diabetics and health enthusiasts must avoid consuming artificial sweeteners of any kind; even the plant-based are not completely safe.

    1. Well, you get life once, I think if you can enjoy sweets with natural Sweeteners then you should go for it. All these nutritionists talk a lot of things, but not everything can be applied to lifestyle with ease.
