My Experience and Review of Custard Powder Brands.

For people who love custards, it is important to choose the right custard powder. After all, it is the main ingredient that offers the desired flavour and consistency to the custard. Today I will be sharing my experience with three custard powders and how good they are at doing the job.

Butterscotch, vanilla, and strawberry are common custard flavours popular among Indians. We only prefer vanilla flavour and my review is based on personal experience.

Weikfield

Weikfield needs no introduction as most kitchens have at least one or other product from the brand. For decades, we have been using the Weikfield brand for preparing custard. It is one of the affordable brands that offer premium quality even at a nominal price. You can buy a pack of 100 grams custard powder for less than INR 50. The powder is easy to mix with milk and makes a great slurry. One of the best things about the custard powder is that it thickens the milk quite fast and offers the desired consistency. We like custard to be a little thicker and adding an extra teaspoon of Weikfield powder can work wonders.

The powder offers a good yellowish tint to the custard. Even the aroma of the custard preparation is pleasant and appetizing but not artificial. Just follow the recipe and rest assured that the custard will not become lumpy. Once chilled and served with fruits or dry fruits, the custard tastes amazing and not synthetic. It is creamy and rich and loved by one and all. The custard has always been a hit among our guests as well. For people who like flowy consistency, the amount of powder in the slurry can be adjusted.

Pillsbury

This is another top brand for custard powder that I liked. It is at par with Weikfield in every way. It mixes well in milk and creates a good slurry. It offers the desired consistency after mixing to the bowl of milk and giving it a boil. Once chilled, it gets rich and creamy. Pillsbury custard is delicious to say the least with perfect vallina flavour and aroma. The custard can be used for fruit salads and puddings. If you wish to treat your friends or family, it makes for a great choice. It is quick, hassle-free, and extra delicious. The smooth and velvety custard is going to impress everyone.

Blue Bird

I never wanted to buy this brand but had to compromise during the lockdown days as we had to buy whatever was available. However, my experience was so bad that I would never recommend anyone to buy the Blue Bird brand. The powder has a yellow tint but lacks the vanilla aroma or flavour. When mixed with milk, it lacks the consistency and thickness that is desired in a slurry. Even after adding 4 tablespoons, the slurry was thin. After mixing the slurry in a bowl of milk and giving it a boil, the custard still remained thin and flowy. Even after chilling it in the fridge, it remained the same. There was no aroma or vanilla flavour in the custard. I am never buying it ever again.

My Verdict

Weikfield and Pillsbury are at par and you can buy either of them. However, my vote goes to Weikfield simply because we have been using it for decades and there is no reason to replace it or switch to another brand. In case Wiekfield is not available, Pillsbury would be my next choice.

Which custard powders have you tried and are there other reliable brands? Do share your experience.

  1. Bakers custard powder can also be considered as an additional option.I have been using this brand since I learned to cook dishes using custard powder and I am very much satisfied with the final outcome. That velvety luscious texture gives an added taste to your desserts.Your cooking gets a new style of aroma which is authentic and flavourful. Can give it a try

  2. I have always used Weikfield products like Baking and Custard Powder, and they are pretty great! I generally use the vanilla flavor, which is super fresh and natural, nothing artificial about it. It sets up really well and has a smooth, creamy texture, which is a must when I am making a fruit custard. Plus, the custard has a nice, deep yellow color that looks really appetizing. I haven’t had any lumps or clumps while making it. Overall, I’m really happy with this stuff! And the biggest thing is that it is pretty cheap and available in our local market at kirana shops.
