I am searching for a thin jacket for winter and also want light padding in that. Not sure if I should search for padded jacket or puffer jacket. What is the difference. Unfortunately it is very difficult to gauge the thickness from pictures.

Padded jackets typically have a quilted design with sewn-in padding, offering warmth without much bulk. So you should go for them. Puffer jackets have a more distinctive look with sections of insulation, synthetic fill, providing great insulation but can appear bulky. Even I don’t like those.
