Please Do Not Buy Hindustan Unilever Water Purifiers

Hindustan Unilever is a huge name in India for household products, but I have been disappointed twice by its water purifier. 6-7 months back my uncle bought HUL Pureit Copper UV Water Purifier. He lives in Tamil Nadu. As my uncle resides in a region with a water TDS of approximately 150 ppm, thanks to the municipal water supply being treated with RO. Given this, he opted for a UV water purifier like the HUL Pureit Copper UV (‎WCUV700) to specifically address the removal of germs, bacteria, viruses, and larger impurities, as an RO purifier is not designed for these purposes.

Why did my uncle choose this water purifier?

My uncle checked the TDS levels in his water supply, and it’s become clear that recommendations for water purifiers are not one-size-fits-all. If your TDS levels are below 250 ppm, there’s no need to invest in an RO purifier; UV or UF options work just fine. Don’t fall for the marketing tactics pushing RO purifiers without considering your specific needs.

In his case, he was concerned about impurities the RO-purified municipal water might pick up on its journey to his home. Passing through miles of iron pipelines and storage tanks, there’s a risk of contamination. This led him to opt for a UV water purifier, specifically the HUL Pureit Copper UV, to eliminate bacteria, viruses, and microorganisms.

While copper water purification is beneficial, he did find a drawback in the HUL Pureit. It lacks a storage tank, making the dispensing process a bit time-consuming. Despite this, its elegant appearance and unique design make it a standout feature in his kitchen. Though it could have included a small storage tank, perhaps 2L or 3L, he appreciated the aesthetic appeal and chose to hang it on the wall, contributing to the overall ambiance.

Power cuts are infrequent in his area, so the HUL Pureit Copper UV suits his needs perfectly. However, be cautious against it if power cuts are common in your location, as the purifier relies on electricity and lacks storage capacity.

I would like to list benefits of this purifier that my uncle noticed:

  • My uncle mentioned that this HUL Pureit UV water purifier is a game-changer where RO purification isn’t necessary. The copper infusion in this purifier significantly enhances the taste of water.
  • It also has the Smartsense indicators feature an advanced alert system that gives you a heads-up 15 days before the filter needs replacement. If you forget, no worries. The machine automatically shuts off when the Germ Kill Kit expires, ensuring you don’t consume contaminated water.
  • He also said that it comes with a 5-year warranty on the UV lamp that HUL provides. I wasn’t aware of that. Unlike RO purifiers, this UV purifier doesn’t waste water and stops dispensing after 15 minutes of continuous use.
  • Another cost-saving feature is that it doesn’t require annual filter replacements like RO purifiers, saving you Rs 3000 to Rs 4000 on maintenance. Plus, HUL throws in a free pre-sediment filter to tackle visible impurities and contamination.

Drawbacks of this filter:

  • One of the notable drawbacks he experienced with the HUL UV water purifier is the absence of water storage capabilities. Being dependent on electricity, this machine becomes rather impractical in areas prone to frequent power cuts. It necessitates pre-storing water bottles, introducing the risk of recontamination if kept outside the device.
  • Despite the appealing aspect of copper-enriched water, there’s a significant drawback – the initial dispensing of copper UV-purified water takes a considerable 40 seconds due to the power-saving mode. It’s a trade-off for the benefits, but it does impact the convenience factor.

Final thoughts:

After six months of usage, my uncle thinks that the overall drawbacks for this water purifier outweighs the overall benefits. This purifier is completely useless if electricity cuts are common in your area. I think this is very significant for anyone deciding to buy this purifier. Personally, I would not recommend it. This is the second HUL water purifier that has come in my relatives house and they have found it completely disappointing. So, please choose wisely.
