I Saved More than 5000 Rupees With BLDC Fans 

I know 5000 rupees a year is not a big deal but when you just look at it from an electricity bill standpoint, then it is huge. Electricity bill is a very huge thing in an Indian household. And despite not using air conditioners a lot, we were getting hefty electricity bill every month. After looking at every appliance usage in my house, I learned that ceiling fans are contributing to most of the bill.

Our home has 8 fans. I researched a lot and came to know about BLDC fans and was seeing advertisements of Atom Berg, so I replaced fans in my home with them. And surprisingly, I saved more than 4000 rupees in a year.

Out of 8 fans, I replaced 5 because we use 5 on a daily basis for almost 10 hours by different members. Almost every fan runs at full speed. After researching, I came to know that it consumed 75 watts of power. I then looked at the ceiling fan power calculator and used it to calculate the electricity consumption.

I assumed the following:

Power of ceiling fan: 75 watts

Daily use: 10 hours

Electricity rate in my city: 7 rs

Daily one fan consumed: 0.75 units

Monthly (1 fan): 22.50 units

Monthly electricity expense of one fan: 157.5 Rs.

Yearly expense (1 fan): Rs. 1890

As I said, we use 5 fans regularly. So the monthly bill of 5 fans is Rs. 787.5. And the yearly comes to Rs. 9,450.

I decided to look at how I can save power consumption and BLDC fans came up. I replaced the fans with Atom Berg and each fan has a cost of Rs. 3500, which means a total upfront investment was of 17500 Rs for 5 fans.

Now, let’s do the same calculation that we did for 1 one for Atom Berg BLDC fan.

Power of ceiling fan: 28 watts

Daily use: 10 hours

Electricity rate in my city: 7 rs

Daily one fan consumed: 0.28 units

Monthly (1 Atom Berg fan): 8.40

Monthly electricity expense of one Atom Berg fan: Rs. 58.8

Yearly expense (1 Atom Berg fan): Rs. 705

So the monthly bill of 5 Atom Berg fans is Rs. 294. And the yearly comes to Rs. 3,528. 

As mentioned before, the overall yearly bill of 5 fans before was 9450, but with Atom Berg BLDC fans, the bill came down to Rs. 3,528. 

Total savings: Rs. 5922 every year. 

So, we were able to cover up almost one-third of the upfront cost in a year.

BLDC fans are the future of ceiling fans:

As I said, our electricity bills shot up dramatically, given the extensive use of various electrical appliances at home, ranging from air conditioners and refrigerators to vacuum cleaners and lights. I have incorporated inverter technology in our refrigerators and ACs, and that switching to BLDC ceiling fans can save more than Rs 5000 annually.

BLDC fans outperform traditional ones in power savings, sustainability with their brushless motor technique, flexibility in handling voltage fluctuations, and quieter operation. After one year of consistent use, we’ve experienced lower noise levels with BLDC fans, along with the added convenience of remote control operations featuring Boost Speed and Sleep Mode, making them a smart choice for a more energy-efficient and comfortable living environment.

BLDC fans are expensive. Here’s why:

In my experience, the BLDC motor stands out as a more advanced option compared to the standard induction motor. Its lower rotor inertial levels contribute to superior dynamic characteristics. What I’ve noticed is that the BLDC fan goes beyond basic functionality – it integrates a microcontroller system that collaborates with the motor, optimizing power consumption in sync with processing speed for enhanced performance. Alongside this, it boasts features like an electronic speed controller, temperature control, temperature sensors, remote control, and specialized software, adding a layer of sophistication to its overall capabilities.

If you look at the electricity consumption and the savings BLDC fans do in electricity bills, then I think it is a great one time investment. There are several companies offering BLDC fans like Orpat, Havells, Atom Berg, Crompton, and more. So you can go for whatever fan brand you like.
