Why I Prefer Ordering Fruits & Vegetables Online: My Experience with Online Delivery Brands

When it comes to buying fresh fruits and vegetables, I used to prefer visiting my local market. There is something about physically selecting your produce that feels reassuring. However, whenever I am in city for my office work, I make the switch to ordering fruits and vegetables online, and it’s been a surprisingly positive experience. Online shopping saves time in cities because I don’t get much time and living alone gets hectic.

Over the past few visits to Bangalore, I have tried several online delivery services, including Amazon Fresh, Big Basket, Grofers (now Blinkit), and Dunzo. While some brands have been hit-or-miss, I’ve found Amazon Fresh and Big Basket to be my go-to platforms. Here’s a quick rundown of my experience with each service.

Amazon Fresh: The Best One-

Amazon Fresh has been a game-changer because of the wide variety of products they offer. Whether it’s seasonal fruits like mangoes in the summer or year-round essentials like tomatoes and spinach, Amazon Fresh rarely disappoints. Their quality control seems to be top-notch, and I have almost always received fresh produce that lasts for days. What I really like about Amazon Fresh is their timely delivery and flexible delivery slots. They also offer competitive prices, and I’ve noticed that many of the items are priced lower than my local vendors.

For example, during my last order, I purchased apples, spinach, and onions, and all of them arrived in excellent condition. The packaging was impressive, no bruised fruits or wilted greens, which is a common issue with some other services.

Big Basket: Good Variety and Consistency

Big Basket has been another reliable option for me. While Amazon Fresh is great for day-to-day needs, Big Basket excels in offering both variety and consistency in their produce. Their app has a well-organized layout that makes it easy to find what I need. Whether I’m looking for organic vegetables, exotic fruits, or staples like potatoes and onions, Big Basket has it all. They have different grades and types of produce. For instance, if I’m feeling fancy and want to try organic kale or imported avocados, Big Basket offers a wide range of premium items, which is something I rarely see on other platforms.

In my experience, Big Basket’s produce is always fresh and delivered in excellent condition. One minor issue I’ve noticed is that their delivery slots can sometimes be limited, especially during peak hours or festive seasons, but it’s a small price to pay for the overall quality.

Grofers/Blinkit: Budget-Friendly but Lacks Variety

I’ve tried Grofers on a few occasions, primarily because they’re known for budget-friendly groceries. While they do offer competitive prices, especially on basic fruits and vegetables, I’ve found their variety to be somewhat lacking compared to Amazon Fresh or Big Basket. For instance, while I can easily get my hands on everyday staples like tomatoes, cucumbers, or potatoes, the range of exotic or seasonal fruits is limited. Additionally, there have been times when the freshness of the produce wasn’t up to the mark. I once received a batch of bananas that ripened too quickly, turning mushy within a day. It is great if you’re looking for a quick, budget-friendly option, but it may not be the best for someone seeking a diverse and premium selection of fruits and veggies.

Dunzo: Quick Delivery but Hit-or-Miss Freshness

Dunzo is more of a last-minute lifesaver for me. If I’m in urgent need of something, say, for dinner or if I’ve run out of essentials, I often use Dunzo. Their main selling point is speed. They deliver within 45-60 minutes, which is excellent if you need something quickly. However, when it comes to fruits and vegetables, the freshness can be a bit hit-or-miss. Since Dunzo works by partnering with nearby stores, the quality of the produce largely depends on the store they source from. I’ve had a few instances where I received less-than-fresh veggies or slightly overripe fruits. It’s a great service for emergencies, but not my first choice for regular grocery shopping.

If you haven’t tried these platforms yet, I highly recommend giving them a shot. Are there any other brands I should try for fresh produce delivery? Let me know your thoughts!

  1. Amazon Fresh is realiable as far as time slots are concerned. Lately we have seen repeated instances of rotten vegetables, though they quickly refund when you raise a complaint with the photo. Pricing is almost always the same between Amazon Fresh and Big Basket.
Swiggy Instamart, Blinkit etc come to rescue on emergencies. I don’t recommend buying regular vegetables and fruits from them. They are way to expensive. E.g. Yelakki Banana of 50 rupees appears at 75-80 rupees there.

Amazon Fresh is our GOTO shop for everything. It is also economical when you have Prime membership. Every week they offer discounts vouchers for various cart sizes. So, I rarely order from Big Basket though they have good product choice and comparable pricing.

    1. I have always loved Amazon Fresh. Ever since I went to Mumbai in 2019, it has been my go to place to purchase groceries. The time slots, offers and discounts make it easier for me to buy from them. I rarely had a rotten vegetable/fruit case with them, but as you said, they are pretty fast on refunds, which other services don’t offer. Swiggy Instamart is only good if you want to buy something urgent, and yes, they are pretty expensive.
