What to Look for When Buying Electric Kettles

When I recently decided to buy an electric kettle, I realized it was time to invest in one that could make life easier, especially for those quick teas and coffees, instant noodles, or even boiling water for cooking. After using stovetop kettles for years, an electric kettle seemed like a more convenient option, so I dove into researching what to look for in one and ended up with a great model. Here’s how I approached the purchase and the key features I found essential, along with a few good options available on Amazon and Flipkart.

Capacity – How Much Do You Really Need?

The first thing I considered was the kettle’s capacity. Electric kettles typically range from 0.5 liters (perfect for single servings) to around 2 liters. I went for a 1.5 liter model, which is ideal for my small household. It is large enough for multiple cups of tea or coffee and gives a little extra for when friends come over, but it isn’t so big that it takes up unnecessary space.

For families or office use, a 1.7 or 2 liter kettle might be a better choice since it can cater to multiple people at once. On the other hand, if you’re a solo user or only need a kettle occasionally, even a 1 liter capacity could be more than enough.

Safety Features – Essential for Everyday Use

Safety was a top priority. The electric kettle I chose has automatic shut-off and boil-dry protection. These features ensure the kettle switches off automatically once the water has boiled or if it’s empty, which prevents any risk of overheating. Some models also offer cool-touch exteriors and lockable lids, which are great for households with children.

After experiencing the convenience and peace of mind with these safety features, I would highly recommend them. They are especially useful if you tend to multitask in the kitchen and can’t keep an eye on the kettle constantly.

Ease of Use – Simple and Efficient

The cordless design with a 360 degree swivel base has been a game changer. It allows me to easily lift and place the kettle back on its base without fuss. Some models come with extra features like temperature control and LED indicators, but I found that for my everyday needs, a basic kettle with a simple on/off switch and a water level indicator was perfect. The wide mouth for easy cleaning was another must-have.

Material and Build – Durability Counts

Electric kettles come in stainless steel, glass, and plastic. I went with a stainless steel model for its durability and ease of cleaning. Glass kettles look elegant, but they can get quite hot on the outside and might be more fragile in the long run. Stainless steel is a reliable choice as it doesn’t retain odors, and it heats water quickly. If you prefer glass or plastic, look for BPA-free models, especially if you’re boiling water multiple times a day.

Suggested Electric Kettles on Amazon and Flipkart

After extensive research, here are a few models that tick all these boxes:

  1. Philips HD9306/06 1.5-Litre Electric Kettle – Known for its durable stainless steel body and automatic shut-off feature. It’s a great choice for small to medium households.
  2. Prestige PKOSS 1.5-Litre Electric Kettle – This model has a compact design and a sturdy build, featuring boil-dry protection and a 360-degree swivel base, perfect for daily use.
  3. Kent 16023 1.7-Litre Electric Kettle – With a larger capacity and sleek stainless steel body, this kettle also includes a concealed heating element and a water level indicator.
  4. Bajaj Majesty KTX 15 1.7-Litre Kettle – Offers a powerful 1800-watt heating element for quick boiling, boil-dry protection, and a cool-touch handle.

Final Thoughts

Choosing an electric kettle might seem straightforward, but considering factors like capacity, safety, and ease of use has made a difference in my daily routine. Whether you are looking for something compact or a larger model, these points should help you find the right one to suit your lifestyle. I hope my experience helps you make a better choice and that you enjoy the convenience of an electric kettle as much as I do!

  1. Agree on the wide mouth requirement. Searched a lot for an electric kettle that is simple enough for elders to operate and clean. Wide enough for boiling something in water.
Finally settled on Borosil large electric kettle. It was one of those good buying choices. 5 years amd still.works like new. It came with an egg boiling stand inside. Funny part is that stand helped use the lettle as steriliser for infant items. I had seen most of the products you listed above and still chose Borosil for the simplicity and practicality.

    1. Yes, Borosil one is also great, but my brother already had it before but he lives away from home, so we decided to get a different brand, just to try out and Kent one has really been good. It looks sleek because of being transparent.
