Things to know before buying a room heater

I just purchased a room heater from Orpat and thought of helping people by sharing what you should consider while buying a room heater. I have used a few, mainly from Bajaj. And they all perform good.

Main points to consider:

  1. How bad is the temperature? – Buy 2000 Watt heater if the it’s severely cold. Most heater models will come with variable wattage between 1000 Wat – 2000 Watt.
  2. A large plug point may be required: Again, if you’re buying a 2000 watt room heater, usually they will come with large plugs, called 16 Amp (Ampere) plugs. And they won’t go into the small plug points (6 amp) we have at home. (Large plugs are used for AC etc.). The shopkeeper and others may tell you to use a 6Amp to 16 amp converter plug. But beware, the large plug requirement is there to keep you safe. The original 16 Amp plugs in your house have stronger and thicker wires to handle heavy current. When you just convert the plug size and use the small plug outlet at home, you still use the low capacity wiring at home. And running 2000W appliance with high current can put it under pressure. Still, I would say, if you’re running the 2000W heater at lower temperatures, like 1000w, you can go ahead and use a plug converter to convert the size.
  3. With fan or without: The room heaters with a fan inside are good to transfer heat quickly in the room. However, they have the fan noise. On the other hand, the reflecting type with a ceramic heating element or a halogen light do not have a fan and heat the room slowly. They have no noise, but they might light up a dark room as the heating elements heat up red.
  4. Safety: I don’t prefer the fan noise in a room heater. But they are relatively safe as the heating coil or element is inside the device and a fan pushes hot air out. Just like a hair drier. The other ones, without fan, actually have the heating element exposed outside. The outer elements in most designs get heated up very bad and can be dangerous to touch.

The one I just purchased is from Orpat and the fan design. Unfortunately this design doesn’t have the option to stand upright. Some other companies (Bajaj etc) have a design that can be placed horizontal as well as vertical. Hope I helped you decide on a room heater. Feel free to ask if you have a question. I will try to add more details.

    1. This one has a switch at the bottom. It switches off when lifted from floor, right? In that case it’s a problem. We can not place it anywhere, and can not even tilt.

    1. You mean the heaters with normal coil winding on ceramic rods? They are available for less than Rs 300 in local market. Heating takes a lot of time because fan is not there.

  1. Using adapter to change 5amp plug to 15/16amp is dangerous. There is the risk of fire because the room heater will draw more than 10amps when set to 2000watt mode. That can overheat your switches and plugs meant for 5amp current only.
Buy the heater which can run at 1000watt also. That will be relatively safer to use on a 5amp plug.

  2. Thank you for Usha Room Heater imformation. But it is not available on Flipkart. Please search and let me know. Also, is it easy to contact Usha customer care and find spare parts?
