First-Time Suit Buyer: Should I Go for Raymond or Van Heusen?

I am considering getting a custom-tailored suit for Diwali and have been looking into Raymond and Van Heusen, two brands I have heard offer customized tailoring services. I don’t want something too fancy but a suit that’s versatile enough for office gatherings or other occasions. I have never purchased a suit before, so I am completely new to this field and would appreciate some advice. Buying a custom suit seems like a great option because it ensures the suit fits perfectly, which is crucial if I plan to wear it to multiple events. I am also looking for something sober in style, something that’s not over the top but still makes me look sharp.

Raymond Custom Tailoring

Raymond is one of the most well-known brands when it comes to men’s formal wear in India. They have been in the business for years, and I have heard they offer custom tailoring that’s quite popular. Their fabric quality is supposed to be excellent, and since they have their own textile manufacturing, I feel like their attention to detail in custom suits might be better.

What I’m unsure about:

  • Price: How much do Raymond’s custom-tailored suits cost? Is it worth it for a first suit?
  • Service quality: Are their measurements accurate? Do they deliver on time?

Van Heusen Custom Tailoring

On the other hand, Van Heusen is another brand known for its stylish formal wear. While I have seen a lot of their ready-made options, I recently learned that they offer custom tailoring too. I like Van Heusen’s modern designs, and it seems like they offer a more contemporary fit, which could be great for both work and Diwali gatherings.

Questions I have:

  • Fabric variety: Do they offer the same range and quality of fabrics as Raymond?
  • Durability: How does the tailoring and stitching hold up over time?

Factors I’m Considering

  • Fit: Since it’s my first suit, I am hoping the custom tailoring ensures a good fit, but I’ve read mixed reviews about both brands when it comes to alterations.
  • Price: I am looking for something within a reasonable budget, but I am willing to invest a bit more if it means better quality.
  • Versatility: I want a suit that I can wear not just for Diwali, but for office events or formal occasions in the future.

Has anyone tried custom tailoring from either Raymond or Van Heusen? How was your experience with the fit, fabric, and overall service? Would you recommend one over the other, especially for someone buying their first suit?

  1. My first suit was from Blackberry shop in some mall in Bangalore. I had seen other brand suits in different shops and malls. Blackberry shop offers best price. This is still my only suit I sometimes wear to office parties hehe.
