I have been thinking about getting something special for my mom till February, and rose gold jewellery caught my eye. I have seen so many gorgeous necklaces and earrings in rose gold, and it feels like the perfect balance of elegance and uniqueness. However, I don’t know much about rose gold and how it holds up over time. Is it a good option for everyday wear, or does it require a lot of care? I want to make sure I am investing in something that will last and stay beautiful.
From what I have read, rose gold is made by mixing pure gold with copper, which gives it that pink tone. The copper content makes it a bit more durable than regular yellow gold, which is a plus since I want my mom to be able to wear the pieces regularly. But I have also heard that copper can tarnish or change colour over time—does that happen with rose gold, too?
I am concerned about whether the rose gold will darken or lose its shine after a few months or years. Has anyone noticed this with their rose gold jewellery? If so, how do you take care of it to keep it looking fresh? I don’t want to give her something that requires too much maintenance, but at the same time, I want it to last.
Is Rose Gold High-Maintenance?
One thing I need to consider is how often she will need to clean it. My mom isn’t big on heavy jewellery maintenance, so I would like something that’s relatively low-effort. I have read that rose gold doesn’t tarnish like silver, but it can develop a patina—a kind of darkening—over time. Some people like this vintage look, but I am wondering if it’s easy to prevent. Will regular cleaning with a soft cloth be enough to keep it shiny?
Also, I am curious if anyone has experienced their rose gold pieces losing their lustre after coming in contact with lotions, perfumes, or sweat. She might wear the jewellery often, so I want to know if it holds up with frequent use or if it’s more suited for occasional wear.
Durability Concerns
Another factor I am considering is durability. Since rose gold is an alloy that contains copper, it’s supposed to be stronger than pure gold, which scratches more easily. Has anyone noticed how rose gold holds up over time compared to yellow or white gold? I would love to hear if rose gold necklaces or earrings are sturdy enough for everyday wear or if they’re more likely to scratch and need polishing.
I have also read that the quality of rose gold can vary depending on the purity of the gold used (like 14k or 18k). Which would be better for a piece that gets worn frequently? I want to strike a balance between something that looks beautiful and something that lasts.
Has anyone bought rose gold jewellery recently? Do you have any advice on brands, care, or whether it’s a good investment for regular use? I would love to hear your experiences before I take the plunge!
Rose gold is definitely a beautiful and durable option, especially because the copper makes it stronger than yellow gold. It does develop a slight patina over time, but regular cleaning with a soft cloth will help keep it shiny. If your mom isn’t big on maintenance, 14k rose gold is a good balance of durability and elegance for everyday wear without too much upkeep.
I was thinking of going for a 18kt one, but I will see the price difference between 14kt and 18kt, I will then take a call. I was concered about durability but thanks for telling that it is durable.
I won’t recommend buying one because when you go out to sell those they are not getting the right value and also people don’t trust rose gold products. It’s better to look for good designs in yellow gold or og gold jewelleries. I bought one rose gold necklace for my wife, the design was good, but it depelted fast and we had to sell it at almost half the price. Unless you buy from big brand like Tanishq or Malabaar, don’t buy rose gold, because their you get a proper breakdown of gold and other metal ratio.
Oh shoot, I think I am late on this comment, I have already placed the order for one necklace. I think I will wait and see how it is, if my mom is sceptical, I will return it. Thanks for your suggestion still.
